OUR HISTORY AND PURPOSE

The group was founded IN 1980 by Dr. Herminio Diaz, music director at Inver Hills Community College.

The idea was to give talented, Twin Cities area musicians an opportunity to learn playing "Big Band" jazz styles.

Upon The retirement of Dr. Diaz, we wanted to continue reading big band arrangements, and perform for our community. We incorporated as a Non-profit group and changed our name from Inver Hills Community College Jazz Band to RIVER CITY JAZZ ORCHESTRA, and now are self managed by our own members to continue the traditions and preserve the amazing sounds offered by the fascinating sounds unique to a 17 piece band for all to learn about and enjoy.
